Dear Vineela,

Santhoshi Mata Vratam is a very powerful pooja and should be performed with utmost devotion and care. Ma Santoshi is a Brahmacharini (i.e. Spinster) so praying to her is like praying to Ganapathi. She is also the manasa putri of Ganesh. The pooja can be done for 8 weeks or 16 weeks it is upto you to decide on the number.

If you are a telugu person, please visit this site and you will get the information in telugu.

http://www.telugubhakti.com/telugup…

Clear instructions are given: If possible call muttaiduvulu and give tamboolam, else give tambulam to god only and pray to her that you would do it on the day of udayapanam.

Please note the following: 1. Do not touch curd, tomato's or tamarind or anything which is 'pulupu' i.e. sour 2. Please sleep on the floor that day and observe brahmachariya 3. I have done this prayers by fasting till evening and just eating some light tiffin(not even idli or dosa) - it should be some upma, poha or chapathi in the night without onion, garlic or tomato's. 4. Even banana's which is a bit pullupu like that yellow banana cannotbe touched or eaten 5. On the day of udyapana, call small boys for lunch - feed them with sweets and give then some gifts. Give atleast 3 mutaiduvulu tambulam. If you are in india and have a santoshi mata temple near your place then they can assist you in completing the udyapana. 5.Naivedyam for mata santhoshi is basically jaggery and roastedchanna, or payasam.

I hope i have given clarity to your query.

Regards,

I believe you need to perform the vrat for 16 or 32 weeks only, possible to double the 16 but not good to half for 16 is the auspicious number for this vrat.

For this vrat you need 1 coconut (you must use this same coconut for all the Fridays and then give it in the temple on the day you are doing the udyaapan), gud and channa, a lamp to light the diya (ghee only), green bananas, flowers, dhoop, incense sticks, a copper vessel to hold water, Santoshi Mata vrat katha book, haldi, kumkum, and a photo of Santoshi Mata.

To start your vrat you will begin on a Friday. Ideally best done before noon, say the Santoshi Mata katha in front of the ghee lamp if there is no one to listen to the story. One needs to fast for the whole day or incase of sickness can have one meal (without onions, garic, tomato or any other sour flavoring). It can be taken during lunch after doing a 'bhog' for Santoshi Mata. One needs to ensure not to touch any sour things on this day. This is because Santoshi Mata is believed to sit under a milk fall and incase the 'bhakt' touches any sour thing, they not only 'bhrasht' the vrat but as Ma takes her bhakt close to her, it is believed that we also contaminate Mata's abode. The next day after the vrat, the bhakt will first thing eat gud and channa to close the vrat and then eat as normal. Water can be had and some people also believe in having milk without sugar. The water which is in the copper vessel can be sprinkled around the house after prayers and the remaining can be put in a tulsi plant. If you do not have tulsi plant, you can add it to the drinking water in the house so everyone will be cleansed. After the duration of the vrat, an udyaapan needs to be done in order to complete the Poojan in a proper manner. You will need to prepare items like puri, channe ka saag, kheer, and feed 8 children. This can be done at any Santoshi Mata Temple. After feeding them you will need to give them something too, like books, pens, etc. In no case shall you give them any money.

Best wishes.

Hello Vineela

As there are already good responses regarding the performance of Santhosi Mata Vratam there is no need to mention again.

I want to tell you that if you have any wish / desire to get by completing the Santhosi mata vratam you have to strictly follow the rules and regulations written in the vratam book until you finishes your Udayapana.

Other wise if you are interested to do Santhosi mata vrata with love and devotion without any desire (i.e., nishkama bhakti) and without any udyapana, you can do one week or any number of weeks and there are no restrictions and the above will not be counted for Udyapana.

But of course you have to strictly avoid sour items at any cost.

If you have enough time and patience you can continue with 16 week of Santhosi mata vrata and start a fresh.

hi vineela, check this link for Guideline For Prayer Of Santoshi Maa http://jaisantoshimaa.com/eng_vidhi… Santoshi Mata Pooja is usually performed for a period of 16 Weeks on Friday.

You will be required to have a Santoshi Matt Photo, the Pooja book which contains the story and for prasad you will need roasted chana, jaggery and green banana.

"You are not supposed to eat or touch anything which is sour like Curd, Lemon Etc"

On a Friday morning have head bath and place the photo in a clean Pooja area and put a small Kalash. Place Santhoshimatha's photo and decorate it with flowers. Keep channa (soaked in water for 6 hours in water) or puffed bengal gram along with jaggery piece and bananas as prasadam. Light diya before the Goddess. Chant the mantras and read the story and give aarti to the Goddess and have prasadam. You can do fasting the entire day or can have food only once in a day (may be supper or dinner). You are not supposed to eat anything sour on the day of the Pooja...

You need to do this for 16 weeks on Friday, and after you finish the 16 weeks you will be required to do Udyapan, i.e. you will be required to offer food to kids and remember not to feed them anything sour and not to give them any cash, as they might use the cash to buy something sour.

First gather the things required and then start the Pooja.

Things required for the Pooja:

1 kalash betel leaves flowers dry whole channa and jaggery for prasad camphor for aarti agarbatti diyas turmeric kumkum photo of santoshima coconut for kalash (have to continue with the same coconut till you complete Pooja) a wooden stool for placing the moorthi rice mixed with turmeric

Prayer to Santoshi mata's father Ganesh, mother Riddhi Siddhi. Prayer to wealth, gold, silver, pearl, and other gems. Prayer to Ganapati to fulfill all our wishes. To have success in business, to remove poverty, destruction of evil. Let there be peace and happiness and light. Let there be a house full of children, profit in business and huge earnings, fulfillment of one's desires destruction of evil, removal of sorrow and worry. The name of Santoshi mata gets all the work done smoothly. Say Jai [salutations] to Santoshi Mata.

During this katha one should hold jaggery [gur] and roasted gram [channa] in their hand. The listeners should keep saying "Santoshi Mata ki Jai" "Santoshi Mata ki Jai" "Santoshi Mata ki Jai" all the time. At the end of the story the jaggery and gram, which is held in their hand, should be collected and given to the mother cow to eat.

The jaggery and gram kept in the vessel should be distributed as prasad to one and all.

Before starting the narration of the story, fill water in the vessel [kalash], and on top of the kalash keep a small bowl filled with gram and jaggery. After the katha finishes that is after the aarti, the water in the vessel should be sprinkled in every corner of the house and the remaining water should be poured into the Tulsi [basil] plant. One should buy jaggery and gram worth Rs. 1.25np and do the fasting. There is no problem if one does it with only 25 paise. If there is jaggery in the house, take that, do not worry because the mother sees to the sentiments, more or less does not concern her. Therefore as per your capacity with devotion you can make the prasad and offer with love and do the fasting.

On the Udayapan [last day] you distribute 2-½ kg. Khaja [cashews], poori, kheer, gram curry, sweets. Light the lamp of ghee and keep saying "Santoshi Mata ki Jai" and break the coconut. On this day there should not be any sour item in the house. Do not eat any sour item yourself nor offer anyone. On this day, feed eight boys food. If the children are there in the immediate close family - elder or younger brother-in-law's children, then do not call from outside. If there are fewer children from close family, you can call children from the Brahmins, relatives or neighbor's children. Do not give them any sour item and as per one's capacity give them gifts. Do not give money but give them any item. The person doing the fast after listening to the story should have the prasad and only one time meal. This way the Mother is very happy, and sorrow, poverty will be removed and wishes will be fulfilled.

So you are a devotee of Santoshi Mata. That is a good thing. First thing just think what is a POOJA. It is nothing but paying respects to your beloved god concept ( Ista Devata ). To the best of my knowledge the god has never prescribed any specific proccedures through which he or she will be pleased. The only thing He or She asks for is your sincerity and not any rituals. The concept of various rituals were the creations of certain people depending on their own experiences which were the results of their own sincerity and capasities. That does not mean anybody just copies the same proceedures of rituals will also get the same result. Then it becomes a ritualistic proceedures without any sincerity behind it. And I am sure you will neever get any result from such mere ritualistic acts what ever they may be. Insted what I will advise you is just simple things. For example you are sitting for taking a delisiouslyy prepared meal. First touch the meal and just visualise in your mind that you are offering a delicious meal to your God and after that take your meal as if it is a balance of the offering you made to your God. But with full sincerity and firm faith. You will see miraculous results emerging. Do not bother much about rituals. Here is a simple story. Once Narada who was under the Egoistic feeling that he is the best devotee of Lord Vishnu went to see Vishnu. Narada asked Visnu who is his best devotee. Lord Vishnu pointed to a poor man in the forest who was a timber merchant cutting the wild trees and selling it aas firewood. Narada got surprised and want to meeet the person who is considered to be a better devotee than himself by lord Vishnu. So went to see him. When Narada reached the house the person was not in and only his very old parents were available. They asked Narada to be seated and told him that their son will come soon. Narada waited patiently and after a long time deep in the night the person came home. He just told hellow to narada and asked him to be excused for some moore time till he finishes his duties. He then took his parents gave them bath, made food for them and served them after that he made his parents taken to their bed and made them comfortable on the Bed for sleep. Then he came out and invited Narada for dinner. What ever the food balance was there was divided equally and they both had their dinner. After the Dinner he gave Narada a Bed for sleeping and he also slept on another. While going to sleep he just called - Narayana- Narayana - 3 times and went to deep sleep. Narada wwas puzzled. While he used to ssing the praises of Lord Vishnu for the wholeday this man has just recited the lords name only 3 times. Next day morning the man got up before Narada wokeup and had left for his daily duties of cutting logs. So Narada waited. Again the night came and the same repeated. Then got comppletely puzzled he again went to see Lord Vishnu and asked how is that such a person who merely recites your name only 3 times a day is superior to himself who day in and day out was reciting the lords names. Lord vishnu told Narada that He is utilising his maximum time and full faith in Me with sincerity. So he is the best Devotee. This was a blow to Naradas Ego. But what does it teach us? The God is pleased more with the Sincerity and not by Rituals and very expensive paraphernalias. So do not bother much about the rituals. Have Firm and Sincere faith in your Ista Devata, and just immagine every action of yours is an offering of respect to your beloved Ista Devata. That is the best form of POOJA.

For this vratham, You are not supposed to eat anything sour. Just plain food. You can get vratham book and do puja at home. Soak black channa over night, offer to devi. Call mutthaidu's and give tambulam, channa , pan leaf etc.. You can do 8 weeks or 16 weeks, left to you. At the end you have to do udyapana in the temple.

if it is as vratham it has to be for 16 weeks. inviting muthaidulu on every friday is your choice.the main idea behind inviting a muthaida is a belief the maa sathoshi comes in some muthaida's form. so if you cant call muthaida every friday you can call them on last week.follow the procedures in vratha katha and vidhanam
