Just wanted to know is there a specific time or place to maintain to read the Sai Satcharithra...My friends say that we are not supposed to keep the book on the bed and read...I believe that devotion is the most important thing that God looks for...but Is that true ?
I will also concur with ur friends' views in this regard.
Let me try to explain/elaborate:
Why do one read Sai Satcharithra? Obviously it is to get noble ideas and to learn from his life incidents. One wants to improve his thinking, life style, approach to issues by reading such books.
Nobody reads such books as reading a novel or newspaper. The importance we give while reading such books is more than the importance we give while reading text books for examinations.
Yes. examinations are to be passed. Whereas reading books like sai satcharithra is to pass the LIFE examination. So obviously one has to give more importance.
Under this context it will not be advisable to read by lying down on bed. We are normally supposed to go and lie down on our bed to sleep alone or with our life partner.
So obviously what is to be done in bed alone should be done there. Reading sai satcharitra like book is to be done alone/in group by sitting right and with hundred per cent involvement on that. When u read with concentration u try to follow the incidents and attempt to learn from such incidents. We learn that we should not be greedy. We should not envy over others' possessions.
We also learn that money alone is not sufficient for happiness in life. We learn to donate services to others is like serving God.
So now u will also agree that it is not advisable to read such books by lying down on bed. It is ideally done in the mornings --say after all the people leave for their work/school or in the evening around 6 pm. We are supposed to do this in satvic state of mind and not in tamasic state of mind or rajasic stae of mind.
I am sure u understand the three states of mind. Satvic means when u operate on here and now situation by being calm and quite and not judging issues based on prejudices.
Rajasic state of mind is similar to mentality of a business man -yes while we are in office we have to be in rajasic state of mind. Here our attempt is to make money, produce results.
Tamasic state of mind - is when u go to bed u feel lazy and u feel like sleeping. U cannot think objectively.
I HOPE U WOULD HAVE NOW UNDERSTOOD THAT IT IS ADVISABLE TO READ SAI SATCHARITHRA (LIKE SLOKA BOOKS) EITHER IN THE MORNING OR IN THE EVENING PREFERABLY IN DRAWING ROOM OR POOJA ROOM(IF U HAVE ONE SEPARATELY).
BEST WISHES AND THANK U FOR RAISING THIS QUERY.
WISHING YOU AND ALL THE FAMILY MEMBERS HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010.
Sri Sai Satcharithra should be read as described in the following manner. This information is given out in the website of Sri sai sansthan.
Though water is important for living, dirty water cannot be used, like that Devotional scriptures should be read only in clean spaces. Hence reading it on bed is not advisable.
The procedure of reading Sri Sai Satcharitra: Get the book, from Sri Sai Sansthan, Shirdi 'Shri Sai Satcharitra' in whatever language one chooses to read. Neatly wrap it up in a piece of new cloth, and place it near Baba's photograph or idol with due sanctity. Whether at home or elsewhere, one should always read a few pages of the book every night before going to sleep. Every devotee should try to keep Baba as the last thought before sleep. During crisis it should be read devotionally for a week, as is mentioned in 'Shri Sai Satcharitra'. If possible, reading should begin on a Thursday or on some other special day, such as Ramnavami, Dussehra, Gurupurnima, Janmashtmi, Mahashivratri, Navratri, etc. After it's completion on the seventh day one should feed the poor and destitute either in the temple/home or wherever possible. One should read it sitting in some isolated corner in the temple or in front of Baba's statue or Photograph/painting. If other people are present, then it should be read to them or with them as well. Group reading should always be encouraged. Wherever and whenever possible, it should be read continuously from sunrise to sunset in the temples on auspicious days. Devotees may be asked to read it by turn as is done in chanting the holy name i.e. Naamjap. Encourage children to read this book. Question answer competition from the "Shri Sai Satcharitra" can be organized in temples. 'Shri Sai Satcharitra' should be read to the devotees - sick, old aged and those nearing death as much as possible. All of them will get peace. 'Shri Sai Satcharitra' is a reasonably priced book and is easily available at Shirdi. Therefore, any devotee visiting Shirdi must bring a few copies with him to distribute among the deserving people free of cost. At times, of distress and agony if one sincerely searches for the answers from 'Shri Sai Satcharitra' he will not only find the answers but also solace. His faith will grown in Baba. I pray Shri Sainath to reveal the divine knowledge and mysteries contained in this book to the devotees in the same manner in which he had inspired Hemandpant to write this book sitting in his heart. Shri Sai Satcharitra should be taken by all Sai devotees as Geeta and Bible.
Hi Ashwini in UK! Your friends say is correct as also your belief. But with a difference. You suppose you are interacting with a kid or a younger one, how would you react so as to keep their attention on you and both are happy. Same way is with God. What God likes from humans is not only inner purity but external appearance also. The devout should be well dressed, ornated, neat and clean etc. In this condition will one would like to be parched on bed? No; isn't! Hope your doubt is cleared. Have a nice time.
What is your belief, this is most important. Whether you keep it in bed or elsewhere it does matter hardly. But, it matters how much you are devoted. Mind that devotion is the uncompromising bond in spiritual life. Without devotion, outward showman ship to establish a religious appearance is nothing but hypocracy.
FIRST TAKE HEAD BATH.WEAR NEW R CLEANED CLOTHES. IN THE PRAYER ROOM LIGHT THE JYOTHY PREFERABLY TWO JYOTHYS. PUT SOME NAIVADYAM PREFERRABLY SWEET. FIRST DAY BREAK COCONUT. THEN HARATHY NOW U START READING PREFERRABLY IN ONE PLACE. USUALLY THE PARAYAN FOR A WEEK. LAST DAY ALSO BREAK COCONUT.
Namaskaar Reading of Sai Satcharitra or any sacred text can be done at any time. God does not make these silly rules and restrictions. Most of these rules are man made, usually by Panditjis, who believe they are the authority ordained by God....A truly sad belief. Many will say that a sacred text should not be placed on a bed, out of respect for that text. But this is based on the fact that they believe that what happens on a bed is not sathwic or pure or dharmic, hence one should avoid keeping a sacred text on a bed. This a result of the small minds of those individuals. They believe that the act of sleeping or the conjugal act (between husband and wife) is a impure or undharmic act. It is unfortunate that they do not see these acts as dharmic, and feel guilty at their own participation in it, not realizing that it is all God's will. It is actually beneficial to the reader of a sacred text, to do so prior to sleeping. It keeps the mind elevated, and the vibrations of the mantras and the dharmic thoughts conveyed to the reader, stays with the reader during the dream states. Often times, I wake up the next morning and the mantras are still flowing in my mind as if I have been repeating them throughout the night. So please continue to read any sacred text in your bed, especially prior to sleeping. Many of us even perform our sadhanas or meditations on the bed if it is convenient. I know of many great Saints in South and North that read sacred texts in bed, especially prior to sleeping. I have sat with them as they read, and even place the book on their bed.
There are no specific rules otherwise and BABA always blesses us when we pray with a true and pure heart.
We should start satcharita preferably on Thursday and finish it in a week (7days) . It is alright if we take more time. You can finish the book in a week called Saptaha Paarayana, 2 weeks called Dwisapthaaha paarayana, 3 weeks called Thri sapthaayha paarayana. Following Baba's path is the best thing we can do in our life. Many follow the sapthah way.so Divide the chapters into 7 parts for 7days, and end of 7th day, offer sheera (Kesari) to Sai and distribute to poor near temple. It is said, if a oldman or boy (of 16-17yrs) of age volunteers to get the prasad, he is Sai himself in disguise.
but as ur friend told we should have more devotion and respect towards any god.so for it we should be pure before starting any puja and this should be done in pooja room only. in bedroom we should not read on beds or keep pooja books on beds ,because we sleep on that bed only. pooja should be done in a clean surface and we should sit on floor or stand before god , and do pooja. we should not lean to wall, or sleep or sit on bed while chanting any mantras.
The parayan can be performed as a saptah parayan. This means we start the book on a Thursday and finish on the next Wednesday. This is supposed to be the most powerful wish fulfilling method. Another way is to read one chapter a day. Try to begin on a Thursday. At least try to read this book on few special occasions, Guru-poornima, Ram-navmi, Mahasamadhi day and Gokul ashtami. If one cannot follow any of these routines even reading one paragraph a day is better than not reading at all. What is more important is to read with devotion and faith. Another point that should be stressed is that it is a pure mind and not a pure body that is essential to conduct a parayana. The essence of Baba's teachings is the freedom to take his name in any state or manner. The important thing is to remember him. Each devotee has the freedom, according to his/her devotion and convenience, to follow whatever ritual he/she believes is important towards achieving Baba's love and grace. There should be no hard and fast rules. Om Jai Sai.
Dear Ashwini, God is everywhere, divine and Boundless. We human beings are void. But generally we get positive vibrations when we read holy books, in a particular place in a particular time. There are two things about this: If you read it like a novel you can keep it in any place. If you read it like a mantra or pooja it is better you have a discipline like reading it in a separate place and unique time for the same. It is left to you. God looks for devotion, but when we try to practice some good habits like washing hands before eating, why don't we give that privilege to God? Hope I gave my view points.
I think that there is no specific time of place to maintain to read the Sai Satcharithra. Devotion with purest form of Bhakti from the heart and mind is much more important for the purpose, because if your esteem Bhakti is not available you can't obtain his spiritual blessing.
Dear, ofcourse, if it is just reading like a novel. you can read the book in any posture you like.
If you want to give it a devotional touch, then give it's due respect. would you behave carelessly, and recklessly with your parents and grand parents? show the same reverence to Sai. goodluck. -Prasad.
