When I lost my programming job in 2001 due to the internet bubble bursting, I was thinking I'd go for my dreams of doing something creative for a living. It hasn't worked out and I'm out of savings and in debt. I did learn a lot in those years about myself and creative pursuit and about my favorite topics (psychology and sociology). In the past 16+ months, I have volunteered one day a week building things. I figured help desk/tech support would be a way to use my brain that can handle technical things and my heart that likes to help people, but I don't get replies to these applications. Am I going to have to go for minimum wage jobs like my mother thinks? I'm dreading that even they won't be interested because I look too smart. I have not tried going to temp agencies yet. Maybe that is the answer. I cannot afford to go back to school at this time. Advice, please.

Hi,
There is a lot of change in the today's economy. Programming jobs sector is re-occupying its previous position in the market. As you said that, you have experience in the same field, if you can please try going back to the same programming job.
If not, in the past 16+ years, you learnt something in sociology and psychoogy. Trying practing it. Initially no business or profession will flourish. Have patience. Do some social service (never bother about money for few days). Once you receive some goodwill for yourself, automatically there will be demand for your work.
If you feel like you cant do social service for even few days, while practicing the above, joining some temporary job (technical support, customer support or your choice). Remember this is just a means to livelihood.

You need to identify your core competence. You are going by your heart and not by your brains. The world may need your service in an area of your specialization. You need to introspect and take action according to your core competency.
Pl. have a positive outlook on life and be optimistic. Currently the economy is slowly improving back and we should ensure that we support it and also benefit from it.
Do not think about past, we cannot survive by thinking past, its the waste of time, erase those thoughts from your mind. The only thing you can deal with is present and future.Make each second from now onwards should be building block for your better future.Lightup the fire in you, show the world what you are and what you can do.Nothing is impossible in this world.
Plan, prepare and fix a target date to achive your goals.Resume plays the key role in job search, it represents "you" to recriters, acts as first and last impression.
Analyse your skills which you use to deal with the world around you e.g. people, data, things, ideas. Analyse your skills that you use to manage yourself. Analyse your skills that you use and develop for aspects of your job.
And make a perfect resume, the very first page should reflect your skills, goals, self motive / enthusiasm and achivements.Make some time(fix target date) to prepare according to your resume.Make sure that your going to answer any question on which you have mention in resume.
shoot the resume to job portals and companies. You will defently get response. This is the shortest procedure for your problem.
